Feast of the Saints: St. Barbara

The canton of Falcon Cree invites you to join them in celebration of Saint Barbara, patron saint of fortifications, the military, and things that go BOOM! As St. Barbara was most popular in from the 7-9th centuries in the Roman empire, the event theme will carry a Byzantine influence.

Martial Activities:
 Archery:  Shoot through the window. Armored Combat: TBD. Fencing: Dagger with buckler tournament.

Arts & Sciences Activities:
 Best use of Pearls. Anything pertaining to pearls, preferably (but not required) with a Byzantine influence. Entries may be complete or in progress.  Minimum documentation can be on a 3x5 notecard: Who/What?  When? Where? Why/How? Icons and Triptychs. Any entry involving icons or triptychs.  Entries may be complete or in progress. Minimum documentation can be on a 3x5 notecard: Who/What?  When? Where? Why/How? Armored Hopscotch.  Hopscotch was originally a training activity for Roman soldiers in Britannia.  Soldiers carried their full kit while training; some courses were up to 100 feet in length. We intend to provide a full length hopscotch course, with two categories (heavy armor fighters & civilian). Siege, in a bag.  There will be a class on how to build tabletop siege engines. Class size is limited to 10 siege engines.  Children are welcome with a parent or responsible adult.  Students will be given a bag of materials and basic instructions on how to build a small siege engine.  Only materials provided may be used for construction. Tabletop Siege competition.  Only siege engines constructed on site from the class may be used.  Ammunition will be provided.

Cost Notes:  There will be a non-member surcharge of $5.00 for guests who cannot produce proof of current membership. Did you pre-register?  There is a special discount for pre-registered guests.  Adults $7, & Youth $3.50. Registrations must be post-marked no later than May 3, 2014.

Site:  River Oaks Retreat. 180 Youth Camp Rd., Honea Path, SC 29654. Site opens 8am, closes 9pm.

Site Restrictions:  The site is DRY. No tobacco. No pets. No flame of any kind. Crock pots, hot plates, and the like are not permitted. All bodies of water and structures not in use for the event are strictly off limits. Locations will be marked on site maps, and signs will be posted. Parents/guardians be advised:  This is a new location for our use.  Although the areas used for event activities are reasonably close together, the site grounds are large and spread out. Please monitor your children closely.

Merchants are welcome at Feast of the Saints.  Please be prepared to provide your own tables and to be outdoors. Please contact the Event Steward for space.

Directions:
 

From Greenville: Take your best route to I-85, exit 46 (SC-291 S). SC-291 will merge into US 25 S / August Rd in 2.1 mi.  Follow US 25 for 10.3 mi, then turn right onto SC-247 Cooley Bridge Rd, follow 3.1 mi.  Turn left onto Holiday Dam Rd., travel 4.3 mi, then turn right on Holiday Dam Rd. After 0.4 mi, turn right on Youth Camp Rd.

From Columbia: Take your best route to I-385 N, exit 5 (SC-49 S). Turn left on SC-49 S and follow 2.1 mi.  Turn left at Lucas Ave (US-221 S). After 0.7 miles, continue onto N Harper St for 0.9 miles. Merge right onto Church St, then left onto US-76 Bypass W/ Anderson Dr. Follow US-76 W for about 16.7 miles, then turn right on US-76 W/US-25 N/ Augusta Rd. Travel 3.1 miles, then left on McCullough School Rd.  At 3 miles, turn left onto Holiday Dam Rd. After 0.4 mi, turn right on Youth Camp Rd.
