Southern War Practice V
(2013-09-13 - 2013-09-15 - Site opens at 2:00 PM & Closes at 2:00 PM)
Ritterwald
Come join the Canton of Ritterwald and the Barony of Nottinghill Coill as we once again prepare for War of the Wings with a day full of light- and heavy-weapons melee scenarios, teaching of the various techniques and arts of war, and target and combat archery. There will also be several activities related to the Science of War!
Martial Activities: Heavy- and light-weapons melee and instruction. No tournaments. Target archery and (hopefully) combat archery. This will be one of the last opportunities to authorize in heavy and light weapons prior to War of the Wings VII.
We are also attempting to have thrown weapons if we can get a marshal and equipment
Arts & Sciences Activities: Competitions will be in two main areas. (1) The Sciences of the Middle Ages. For instance, explore cryptology, build an astrolabe, research the scientific or mathematic side of anything Medieval. (2) Siege Weapons. Build a scale model catapult, trebuchet or ballista (for example), and launch standard marshmallows for distance and accuracy. A third competition is open to newcomers: one year or less experience with your Science or Art, regardless of how long you\'ve been in the SCA. In all three competitions, documentation is appreciated but not required. An Open Display table will be available for everyone else.

Directions:
Most GPS services will correctly navigate you all the way to Woodland Drive but we have found that many will place the driveway entrance approximately 1/4 off. Look for SCA signs as you draw near.
From Points North and East: Find your best route to Interstate 20 westbound. Take Interstate 20 to Exit 22, Aiken, SC (U.S. Rte. 1). Take Rte. 1 South to Aiken. In Aiken, take Rte. 19 south into New Ellenton. At the only light in New Ellenton (there\'s a used car dealer on the left as you make the turn), turn right on Smith Ave. At the end of Smith Ave., turn left onto Old Whiskey Rd. Take the first right onto Woodland Dr. Then drive about 1.25 mile; the driveway is on the right. NOTE: Driveway is ~1/2 mile long; stay on driveway until you see Troll!
From Augusta and Points West: Cross the Savannah River on Sand Bar Ferry Rd. into and through Beech Island. Go through the two lights on the east side of Beech Island and under the overpass, staying on Highway 278. Go ~14 miles to Woodland Dr. (2 roads intersect close together; Woodland is the 2nd one.) Turn left (at the Public Golf Course sign) and go ~1/2 mile. Turn left onto driveway. NOTE: Driveway is ~1/2 mile long; stay on driveway until you see Troll!
From Points South and East: Find the best route to Rte. 278 westbound toward Aiken/Augusta. Take Rte. 278 until you reach New Ellenton and the junction with Rte. 19. Cross Rte. 19 at the light and continue on Rte. 278. Go ~1 mile farther on Rte. 278, then take the first right onto Woodland Dr. (across from the Public Golf Course sign.) Drive ~1/2 mile. Turn left onto driveway. NOTE: Driveway is ~1/2 mile long; stay on driveway until you see Troll!
