Highland River Melees and Investiture
(2009-06-05 - 2009-06-07 - Site opens at 5 PM & Closes at 1 PM)
Highland Foorde

In the year 1278, Llewelyn ap Grufudd (Llewelyn the Last) pays homage to King Edward I. He is finally allowed to marry Elinor, daughter of Simon de Montfort. King Edward claims northern Ce¬redigion and begins building a string of strong castles at Aberystwyth, Flint, Rhuddlan, and Builth to enforce his presence in Wales. Bit by bit Edward and his officials gradually extend English control within Wales. In so doing, they alienate leaders disposed to be their allies. In 1282 Llywelyn’s brother Dafydd has had enough, and launches an attack on Hawarden Castle. Dafydd’s upris¬ing spreads quickly, and Llewelyn gives it his support—perhaps spurred by the death of Elinor in giving birth to a daughter, Gwenllian. King Edward makes a show of offering concessions, but the arrogance of the terms make it impossible for the Welsh leaders to accept. It is now June 6th and a contingent of King Edward’s men are attempting to cross the Menai Straits . . . which side will you fight on? Prepare yourselves for a day of exiting melee fighting, arts and sciences, and bardic fun.
